Navy League of the United States - Denver Council

Citizens in Support of the Sea Services and Their Families

The Denver Council meeting on Friday evening March 17th at the Doubletree Hotel Central Park Denver was both interesting and inspiring. Our Sea Cadet units,  the Lexington Division and Training Ship Colorado posted the colors to open the meeting. As always they did a great job.

We were proud to present awards to the Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Sailors of the Year. Pictured to the right are CTT2 Olivia Jones, Junior Sailor of the Year, CTN1 Devon Smith,  Senior Sailor of the Year, and Chief Cryptologic Technician Nick Cortez. Both young sailors are dedicated not only to their own personal excellence, but also work for the improvement of all those around them.   It was an honor to meet them and recognize their achievements.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Major Tyler B. Folan, the Commanding Officer of the Marine Recruiting Station Denver.  He is responsible for 94 Marine Recruiters working in a large geographic area that covers 5 states.

This dynamic Marine gave us on overview of the Mission of the Marine Corps as a warfighting force dedicated to the defense of our country.  The Marine ethos requires the physical and moral courage to become an ethical warrior steeped in the core values of the Marine Corps.  Marines are always prepared to be forward deployed to meet all challenges that arise, with the flexibility to execute their mission in rapidly changing situations.

He spoke about the challenges to military recruitment in today’s world of low unemployment.  Only 1% of the eligible age group (17-24) meet all requirements and have the propensity to servie.  Only .1% actually end up serving in our military.  He urged veterans to act as ambassadors for the Armed Services by making the most of all opportunities to share their military experiences.
